Locations near ice cold bodies of water – like TR1, by Lake Ontario – employ unorthodox natural cooling systems instead of energy hungry active cooling. Some locations are even using fuel cells for power, drastically reducing carbon emissions.

And the innovations keep coming. So far, Equinix has invested more than $129 million in energy efficiency upgrades, retrofits and improvements, and this figure is steadily increasing.
